The Big Blue
2022
In light of the pandemic, I moved into the living room of my grandparent’s apartment in Victoria, Canada, after more than a decade of not having lived together. While we were away from every other, I hardly shared with them my self-discovery experience, particularly the struggles with my racial, sexual and immigrant identities. The reunion with my grandparents was filled with deep love and nostalgia, but also with strangeness and distance.
I started to collect old family photos from my grandparents’ archive, which informed a graphic and three-dimensional formal exploration through cyanotype reprography, collage and digital visualization. It conceived ambiguous family spaces where I imagine we can spend time together, communicate and express our feelings without any reservation.
